Coral Gables is located southwest of Miami and as of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 42,249. Coral Gables, an extremely affluent city, was one of the first planned communities and prefigured the development of the gated community and the homeowners association. It was developed by George Merrick in the 1920s. The architecture is almost entirely Mediterranean style.
