Rejuvenated hotels and new luxury condominiums in Surfside are changing the style of Collins Avenue, but Harding Avenue, retains the feel of an old-style main street with small shops and a 50's corner drugstore and soda fountain. Small bistros welcome strollers for a casual meal. Shows and events take place at the oceanfront pink Community Center. Just south of Surfside, the North Shore State Recreation Area offers an unspoiled beachfront nature preserve and picnic area.

Founded on 1935, Surfside was incorporated through the signatures of only 35 people, members of the Surf Club, a private club in Town. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,909. What makes Surfside most impressive is its strong and consistent commitment to the quality of life of its residents. Old and new houses are mixed together in a quiet, peaceful and relaxed neighborhood setting. To preserve this atmosphere, the condominiums and hotels along the oceanfront are not permitted to exceed 12 stories in height.
