Margate

Description

Margate is one of the traditional cities located in northwest Broward County which are experiencing a redevelopment boom in the last few years. It was May 30, 1955 when Margate became a town and just a few years later it was incorporated as a city on June 22, 1961. Margate founder Jack Marquese considered his town a gateway to the western part of the county, so in 1965 he used part of his surname and a noun to create the city name.

Margate, planned as a retiree community, now is growing more populous, younger and more diverse, with a population of 54,000, its own bus system and 105 acres of parks, while the percentage of owner-occupied homes increased from 78.3 percent in 1990 to 80.1 percent in 2000. The city of Margate is a perfect blend of commerce, schools and homes, with an old-town charm but all the comfort of urban life, making it the perfect place to raise a family.
