Sugarloaf Key is one of the larger islands of the Lower Keys, in Monroe County, Florida. Legend says that it got its name from the Indian maidens who lived on the Key and resembled an old fashioned loaf of sugar. Population on Sugarloaf Key began to grow in the 1960s, and today the area is a thriving community with a public school that services all of the Keys from Bahia Honda to Big Coppitt.
The Lower Keys are known for their tropical environment, but also for their natural, unspoiled setting and abundant wildlife. The Lower Keys are the most “untouched” by population growth and human “progress.” However, as with all of the Lower Keys, you will find a wide variety of water sports on Sugarloaf Key. The main attractions on Sugarloaf Key are the lush surroundings, crystal blue water, white sand beaches, unique wildlife and a variety of colorful, tropical plants and flowers
